Beginning of the year neh!
We can all agree that it is an ideal time to press the reset button. It is easier to reflect, consolidate, (re) start or continue with whatever we deem important to our growth. So, whatever you are planning, I wish you all the success. I hope you have come up with a plan that is realistic, clear and focused. Oh, before we even talk about planning, have you reflected on your last year. Do you know why you are where you are today?
An honest reflection, possibly with some feedback from others, can help you see what you missed – your blind spots.
I have been hard at work trying to figure out a few things too. My 2022 scorecard has both good and bad ratings. Career wise, I did well. Socially, not so good. Unfortunately, my physical and mental health suffered the most. They took a lot of heavy punches. This has influenced how I want to approach 2023. Some areas of my life need a reboot, others a complete overhaul.
I know that not everyone relates to goal setting. And that’s ok. If you do, we are in this together. If you don’t, try it. I would love to hear from you how it is going. I recognise that making changes is not an easy thing. Over the past week, during my reflection sessions, I had to remind myself of the things I should do to achieve my 2023 goals. It is my hope that by sharing my thoughts with you, I will be contributing to your journey of finding a life beyond where you are today.
Point 1: Things don’t just change. Yah. You know when you keep hoping for a new job, but you are not applying. Or you are telling yourself that your health will get better, but you are not taking care of yourself? That is where the problem starts. You want things to happen to you, but you are not doing your part. Things don’t just change or happen. You must put in the work to change them. I must act for my health because I know that no one is going to do it for me.
Point 2: Create your own luck. Luck is defined as success or failure apparently brought by chance rather than through one’s own actions. My take is that luck is facilitated by action. When you want to start a business, but you are not taking the necessary actions, you will never see your luck. By acting, you are facilitating your luck. The success of that business begins with you starting. That’s how you make your own luck.
Point 3: Be goal orientated. I am often told that I like to push too many goals at the same time. It is true, I sometimes do. I seem to convince myself that I can multitask. I can, but it doesn’t always work. I get distracted and lose focus. So, lately I try to do one thing at a time. The outcomes of my initiatives have become better. I finish what I started. I don’t end up with four incomplete tasks. The point is, you can have several goals, but execution is a different thing. Implementing one goal at a time works better than three goals. Try catching two birds at the same time and see what happens.
Moral of the story!
Waiting for other people to solve your problems or tell you how to is self-defeating. You are deferring your responsibility to others. Remember, they are not obligated to act immediately. When it comes to your own life situations, you must be your own starring. Change your own game. Start first and let others come when and where you need them. As your own game changer, you are more in control of your outcomes than relying on others.
I believe that a life beyond is achieved through effort, focus and consistency. That’s game changing for me. So be your own game changer! You get my point?
Happy New Year. Wishing you all the best in 2023
