Ai guys! It’s said that most people give up on their New Year’s resolutions by the third week of January. I hope you are still on it and getting some good results. Luckily, I didn’t set any this year! I set my goal to be as healthy as possible in 2024, but let me be honest, I didn’t take it seriously until the last quarter of the year. That is when I drew up an action plan focusing on three specific issues that need pay attention to if I had a chance to achieve my goal. Now, I am in 2025 and I am using beginning of the year as my timetable to measure how I can achieve “maximum” health—my life beyond chronic illnesses.
How I’m Tracking My Progress
Every week, I document my progress on three key areas:
✅ What I eat
✅ My gym visits
✅ Mental wellness
1. What I Eat – Score: 80ish%: Food hasn’t been my biggest struggle. I eat fairly healthy, but I have two weak points:
When attending conferences and hotel meetings — Yoh! There’s always food, so I tend to overeat without realising it! I told myself that, the only way to manage this is through discipline and learning to say no to myself.
Limpopo visits—When I go home, it’s game over. Pap, tripe, trotters... you name it, I eat it! I don’t have a solution for this one because I love it. Any ideas on how I can find a better balance between enjoying my cultural meals and sticking to my health goals? Atleast I only go there once or every second month.
2. Gym – Score: 80ish%
I set a goal to hit the gym four times a week, but I’ve been consistently going three times. Not bad, but I can do better! My routine started with 3 km on the treadmill and other muscle equipment, and now I’m at 5 km with high intensity—that’s progress!
3. Mental Health – Score: 60ish%
This is an ongoing process. I’m focusing on:
🧘🏾♂️ Practicing mindfulness
👀 Being more present in my environment
🛋️ Seeing a therapist
My therapist (Yes I have one) complimented me that seem more aware and present. He is helping me to ensure that I am still intact to manage life stressors, and it is helping. I feel fully engaged in this journey, but I know real change takes time. Maybe in a few months, I’ll have a clearer picture of my progress. This month (Feb) I am going to attempt the impossible! Quit coffee and wine.
But besides that, So Far, So Good, I think!
My Life Beyond journey has been activated! If you’re on a similar path, keep going—or if you haven’t started yet, why not now?
